Easy Things to Draw for 6-Year-Olds

Six-year-olds are ready to draw whole scenes, not just single objects. They can tell a little story on the page — a house with a garden and a sunny sky, or a dinosaur stomping past a volcano. These prompts give them a subject and a setting.

What can a 6-year-old draw?

By six, kids reliably place a sky at the top and ground at the bottom, and they enjoy filling the space between with details and a storyline. They can draw several things in one picture and are starting to care about getting them “right.”

Tips for helping a 6-year-old draw

  1. 1Sketch light first. Encourage soft pencil lines to plan the scene, then go over the parts they like.
  2. 2Fill the background. Prompt for sky, ground, sun, or clouds so the whole page feels finished.
  3. 3Ask about the story. “What’s happening here?” turns a drawing into storytelling and gives ideas for what to add.
